BINTULU: A total of 16 Bachelor of Industrial Chemical Sciences with Honours (BSKP) students from Universiti Putra Malaysia Bintulu Campus (UPMKB) and three lecturers paid an academic visit to Miri Crude Oil Terminal (MCOT) in Miri, yesterday.

UPMKB said in a statement yesterday that the academic visit was an assignment for students involving the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) process for the Petroleum Refining Process CHY3602 Course which is currently being studied.

"Programs such as academic visits are a way for students to build a network of cooperation with the industry as well as provide an opportunity for them to see for themselves how the oil and gas refining process is applied in MCOT," her said.

According to her, during the visit the students were divided into two groups with each group guided by specialists who were well versed in the oil refining process and described in detail the petroleum refining process.

Thus, she said, it makes it easier for students to communicate and ask relevant questions for each process explained to them.

Programme director Eymie Olivia Pias said the visit was a meaningful experience for all BSKP Semester 5 students.

She said it provides an opportunity for students to see and learn more about the knowledge of petroleum refining processing to provide early exposure to them in preparation before entering the world of work in the oil and gas sector.

The course lecturer Dr Tengku Sharifah Marliza said the Department of Science and Technology (JSTEK) will always support such activities to ensure that students are sensitive and ready to meet the needs of the industrial era 4.0 at this time..

"This academic visit program will be held again next year and used as an annual program to strengthen the relationship between UPMKB and MCOT," she added.
